Idris Elba may play James Bond, but not just yet: Spectre producers

The question of who will do the theme song for the next James Bond film Spectre remains up in the air, with the producers saying they’re yet to zero in on an artist despite a lot of interest shown by a “lot of exciting people”.

“Well, we’re still figuring that out. That’s one of the last things, one of the last pieces of the puzzle. But it’s one of the fun things that we look forward to, so it’ll be a while,” said Barbara Broccoli, who produces the Bond movies with Michael G Wilson.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from a lot of exciting people, so it’s kind of been a long list and we’re working our way through it,” Wilson said in an interview with the website Collider on the Mexico sets of Spectre.

The producers of the Bond movies were able to use Spectre – or the Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, a fictional global criminal syndicate – after a long-running legal battle with the estate of filmmaker Kevin McClory ended in 2013.

The fictional organisation, led by Ernest Stavro Blofeld, was created jointly by McClory and Ian Fleming, the creator of Bond. McClory had successfully sued Fleming and gained the rights to Spectre, because of which the Bond movies were unable to use the organisation and Blofeld, who is usually seen with a white cat in his lap.

“Well, we had a dispute over Spectre. After years of discussions, we finally got the rights to it. It’s our last piece of the whole issues with rights that we had to deal with,” said Wilson.

However, Broccoli and Wilson were tightlipped on whether Blofeld would appear in Spectre, which has a cryptic message from Bond's past sending him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation.

But they did address the recent reports about Idris Elba playing Bond, with Wilson saying he thought the British actor would “make a great Bond”.

Broccoli added, “Daniel Craig is Bond, and I don’t want to think about what happens when he goes, but I’m a huge fan of Idris and we all are, he’s a great actor and he could do anything. Ask me when we’re looking for a new Bond, which hopefully won’t be for a long time.”

She added that Craig, the sixth actor to play Bond, has an open-ended contract for the role of 007.
