Rooney scored a brilliant goal on the turn while Ander Herrera found the net twice in a 3-1 win at Old Trafford.
The win lifted United above neighbours Manchester City into third and was a third impressive performance after wins over Tottenham and Liverpool.
And Jones revealed Rooney gave a rousing team talk in order to
keep United's players on their toes.
"Wayne's a leader and everybody follows him," Jones told MUTV.
"He leads by example and doesn't just say things [to the other players in the dressing room] for the sake of it, it really means something.
"He made a comment before the game saying it's no good beating Liverpool if you can't beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford and he was bang on.
"Thankfully we've done that."
