The trend of sequels in Hollywood is nothing new, since filmmakers have been making franchises out of popular films for quite some time now. However, the latest slew of upcoming sequels will be second and third parts of reboots of certain films. We take a look at five such films that will follow the stories of rebooted flicks, further.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
This film, slated for June 3, 2016, will be a follow-up to the 2014 hit film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which was itself a reboot of a trilogy of the same name from 1990 to 1993. While the original franchise was more light-hearted, in the vein of an animated series featuring the Turtles in 1987, the recent reboot was more gritty and serious, moving closer to the characters’ interpretation in the comics. The film, will see actor Megan Fox reprise her role as April O’Neil, and is likely to feature popular characters including Krang, Casey Jones, Bebop and Rocksteady.
Star Trek Three
The American science fiction franchise has been a cult TV show in the late 1960s, followed by a film franchise in the 1970s and 80s. The reboot of the franchise, directed by filmmaker J J Abrams in 2009, saw actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the iconic roles of Captain James Kirk and Spock respectively. The film was appreciated for rebooting the franchise in a way so that fresh stories can be incorporated in future sequels. The film’s sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), saw actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain, the third part will see Roberto Orci as the director. It might go back to philosophical elements of the original series.
Planet of the Apes part three
The Planet of the Apes franchise, which started off in 1968, saw four sequels before being rebooted by filmmaker Tim Burton in 2001. The film, starring actor Mark Wahlberg, was a box office flop, and the franchise was rebooted for the second time in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The movie worked as an origin story, focusing on a revolution by simians lead by the hyper intelligent chimp Caesar. Its sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), saw the primates struggling for control with the surviving humans. The third part, slated for July 14, 2017, will reportedly see a full scale war between the apes and humans.
Godzilla Two
There have been many iterations of Godzilla since the 1950s, but they have been mostly in Japanese films. The big monster was finally adapted by Hollywood in 1998, and though the film was profitable for its makers, it was critically panned, as the storyline deviated from the creature’s Japanese roots. But fan boys praised the beast’s appearance as well as the story in a 2014 reboot by filmmaker Gareth Edwards, which starred Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston. The reboot’s sequel is slated for June 8, 2018, and might see Godzilla fighting popular foes like Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah.
Fantastic Four Two
This is the only sequel of a reboot that has been announced even before the release of its first part. The superhero film franchise, which earlier saw two flicks, Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). Both the films didn’t work well with fans, and a reboot was ultimately announced to be released on August 7 this year. The new version of the Fantastic Four is going to see many changes from the original, including an African American actor (Michael B Jordan) playing the role of Johnny Storm and the supervillain Dr Doom being changed from the ruler of Latveria to an anti-social programmer. The film’s sequel will release in 2017.
