Stats round-up week two: Freakish AB de Villiers and dazzling Gayle-force

The 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup is turning out to be a statistical delight as more records tumbled in week two of the tournament. From AB de Villiers' brilliance to the devastation of the Gayle-force, from a wonderful performance from the Associate Nations to a Trans-Tasman thriller, week two of the tournament was one of the best so far. Here is a statistical round-up of week two of the tournament.
- The 172-run opening partnership between Moeen Ali and Ian Bell was the fifth best opening partnership for England in ODIs. Marcus Trescothick and Vikram Solanki shared a partnership of 200 against South Africa at the Oval in 2003, which is the best ever for England. However, this was the second-best stand for England in all World Cups.
- Gayle smashed his 400th international six during the game against Zimbabwe in Canberra. He is the second player to achieve this feat after
Shahid Afridi.
- Chris Gayle went past 9000 ODI runs, the second West Indies batsman after Brian Lara to go past the landmark.
- Gayle scored his first ODI hundred since June 2013. This is his 22nd ODI century and his second in World Cups, with his first coming against Kenya in Kimberley during the 2003 World Cup.
- The 372-run partnership between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels is the highest for the West Indies for any wicket in World Cups. The previous best was by Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin in St.Kitts in September 2014.
- Gayle now has the highest individual score in the World Cups. He went past Gary Kirsten's knock of 188 against UAE in 1996. He also hit 17 sixes, the most ever in ODI history.
- Gayle notched up the first double hundred in World Cup history. The previous highest was 188 by Gary Kirsten against UAE in World Cups. He is also the first non-Indian to score a double century in ODIs. This is the fifth double hundred in ODIs. It is also the fastest double ton in ODIs.
- Marlon Samuels and Gayle shared a 372-run stand for the second wicket. This is aworld record stand for any wicket in ODIs. The previous highest partnership was 331 between Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1999. This was also the highest partnership in World Cups, going past 318 set by Sourav Ganguly and Dravid against Sri Lanka in Taunton in 1999.
- Gayle notched up his double century off 138 balls, the fastest ever doublecentury in ODIs.
- Gayle's score is the highest individual score by a West Indies batsman in ODIs. The previous highest score by a West Indies batsman in ODIs was 189 by Sir Viv Richards against England in Old Trafford in 1984.
- Gayle equalled the record of most sixes hit in ODIs. He hit 16 sixes in the innings, tied with Rohit Sharma and AB de Villiers. However, this is the most in a World Cup innings, going past the mark of nine sixes set by David Miller against Zimbabwe in Hamilton recently.
- Gayle became the first non-Indian batsman to score a double century in ODIs. This is the first double-century outside the sub-continent as well. This is the fifth double century in ODIs.
- Gayle is the only cricketer currently to have scored a hundred in T20Is, double hundred in ODIs and a triple hundred in Tests.
- Khurram Khan is the third oldest guy to play in the World Cup at 43 years and 249 days. The oldest is Nolan Clarke at 47 and 257 days who played for Holland in the 1996 World Cup and John Traicos at 44 years and 306 days in the 1992 World Cup.
- Shaiman Anwar became the first UAE batsman to score a hundred in World Cups. He is only the second batsman to score a century in ODIs, the first beng Khurram Khan.
- Samiullah Shenwari's 96 occupied 147 balls. It is the longest innings played by an Afghanistan batsman in ODIs in terms of balls faced.
- Shenwari's 96 against Scotland is the highest score by an Afghanistan batsman in a World Cup.
- Afghanistan's one-wicket victory over Scotland in the fifth one-wicket victory in World Cups. This is their first victory in the World Cup while for Scotland, their winless streak continues.
- Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara became the sixth pair to put on 5,000 aggregate runs in ODIs. Their average stand is 52.
- Dilshan smashed a total of 22 boundaries in his knock. It is the most by a batsman in an innings in the World Cup, going past the mark of 21 boundaries hit by Stephen Fleming when he hit 134* against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2003.
- Dilshan (161*) notched up his highest score in ODIs. It was his third 150-plus score in ODIs. His previous two scores were 160 and both came against India.
- Sangakkara became the first player to score a century in his 400th ODI. He reached the hundred off 73 balls. It was his first at the MCG.
- Sri Lanka's innings featured a total of 37 fours and just one six in the entire innings. The only time there was such a big gap between fours and sixes for Sri Lanka was in 1975 against Australia at the Oval in which they hit 37 fours and no sixes.
- In the game between Afghanistan and Scotland, both the nine-wicket partnerships went over 50. It is the only time in ODIs that both nine-wicket stands have gone past fifty. Majid Haq and Alasdair Evans added 62 for Scotland while Shenwari and Hamid Hassan added 60. The 62-run stand for Scotland is the best ninth-wicket stand for Scotland in ODIs.
- AB de Villiers smashed the fastest ever 150 in ODIs, beating Shane Watson's record (83 balls against Bangladesh in 2011).
- He also blasted the second-fastest World Cup hundred, taking 52 balls to get to the landmark. Kevin O'Brien's record (50 balls, against England in 2011) stays intact, for now.
- AB de Villiers now has the fastest fifty (16), hundred (31) and 150 (64) in ODI history.
- Jason Holder conceded 104 for 1 off his ten over, which included 64 runs off the last two overs. These were the worst-ever figures by a captain in ODIs and the second worst figures in ODIs. He also now has the worst ever World Cup figures.
- South Africa's total of 408/5 is the second highest World Cup score, behind India's 413/5 against Bermuda in 2007. This is also South Africa's highest ever World Cup score, bettering the 356/4 they made against WI in 2007.
- Each of de Villiers' 20 ODI tons have come at a strike-rate of over hundred, making him the only player to boast of such a record.
- AB de Villiers becomes the only player ever to score three hundreds against the same opponent in World Cups. He had scored hundreds against WI in 2007 and 2011, too.
- AB de Villiers becomes the quickest ever to get to 3000 ODI runs as captain, getting to the mark in 60 innings. MS Dhoni (70) of India is next on the list.
- South Africa's 408/5 is the highest ever ODI total in Australia.
- Jason Holder became the first bowler ever to concede over 100 runs in a 10-over spell in World Cups.
- This is the fourth highest score by a captain in World Cups. Vivian Richards with 181 in 1987 tops the list.
- 34 Runs off an over by Holder is the 2nd most ever in World Cups.
- Most runs conceded in 2 consecutive overs in all ODIs: 64 J Holder today, 49 S Finn Eng v NZ at Wellington 2015.
- AB de Villiers now has 415 runs vs West Indies, the most against a single team in World Cups. He has slammed hundreds in all the three innings he's played against them.
- AB de Villiers also scored the highest individual score at no. 5 in ODIs. His 162 beat Angelo Mathews' score of 139 against India last year.
- South Africa scored 163 runs off the last 10 overs - This was the highest number of runs ever scored in the final ten overs of an ODI.
- New Zealand secured a one-wicket win over Australia in a thrilling encounter in Auckland. This was the sixth one-wicket victory in the World Cup,
- Australia lost the match with 161 balls remaining, which is their second-biggestdefeat in ODIs.
- Mitchell Starc picked up 6/28, which are his best figures in ODIs. Trent Boult also picked up 5/27, which is his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs.
- Kumar Sangakkara has gone past 13000 runs in ODIs as a wicketkeeper. He is theonly wicketkeeper-batsman to reach this landmark. He is also the leading run-scorer for Sri Lanka in World Cups, overtaking Sanath Jayasuriya's mark of 1165.
- Lahiru Thirimanne became the youngest Sri Lankan batsman to score a century in a World Cup at 25 years and 174 days. On the same day, Joe Root became theyoungest England player to score a century in a World Cup at 24 years and 61 days.
- Kumar Sangakkara scored back to back centuries as he smashed a century off 70 balls against England in Wellington. This is his fastest century in ODIs ever.
- - The unbeaten 212-run stand for the second wicket between Thirimanne and Sangakkara is the best ever for Sri Lanka in World Cups. The previous best for Sri Lanka was 210 between Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sangakkara in their previous match against Bangladesh in Melbourne in 2015.
- The 212-run stand between Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne was the best second-wicket stand for Sri Lanka against England in ODIs.
- Shahid Afridi was dismissed for a duck for the first time. This was his 30th ODI duck, the second-most by a batsman after Sanath Jayasuriya's 34.
- Wahab Riaz scored his maiden ODI fifty. This is the highest score by a No 8 batsman for Pakistan in World Cups. He is also the first Pakistan player since Abdul Razzaq to score a fifty and take three or more wickets in an ODI.
